Ask most men, and they will say that the woman is beauty personified. Perhaps in his mind he has some image of the woman of his dreams – nor should that surprise us.
Thousands of years of classical art has shaped men ideas of beauty, and although the modern woman is thinner, the classical figure still alive and well today. Breasts have been fashion and religious icons for millennia, from ancient Babylon, the Egyptians or the busty women of Crete.
Now sex appeal is used to sell to us on a daily basis, has used sex to sell, and if you believe the media, media big breasts are in vogue. Are women influenced by male figure fashion? A search on the net and you find women claiming they feel more confident after a breast enhancement.
Lingerie manufacturer Frederick’s of Hollywood states that the average bra sold has grown from a 34B in 1996 to 36C. UK figures claim a change from 36B to 36C from 1997 to 1999 and bust size in Asia grew from 34A to 34C between 1980 and 2000 according to The Penguin Atlas of Human Sexual Behavior.
So it is no wonder some women see breast augmentation as a quick way to increase their bust and that over 300,000 breast enhancements performed in the US in 2008. However, more than 40,000 implant removal procedures were also reported in the same year.
Aside from the unnatural look and feel of an operated bust, some women claim they can hear a “sloshing sound” from saline-filled implants, states the NRC, interfering with sexual intimacy.
Studies of saline breast implants and silicone gel breast implants conducted by implant manufacturers state that almost half of first-time augmentation patients experienced at least one local complication within the first three years states the National Research Center for Women & Families (NRC).
These complications include pain, scar tissue, surgical complications like infection, chronic breast pain, breast or nipple numbness, capsular contracture, breakage and leakage, and skin death. Scientists from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) have found a 21% overall increased risk of cancer for women who had implants for at least seven years.
Primarily these were cancers of the brain, respiratory tract, cervical, and vulva. However, more clarifying research is needed to prove any causal link.
“There is no research evidence that implants cause breast cancer” says the NRC. However, breast implants can obstruct mammograms, decreasing the accuracy of breast cancer screening.
Studies also link implants to autoimmune diseases, although earlier, less well designed studies initially suggested otherwise. “Women who had breast implants for at least 12 years were more likely to die from brain tumors, lung cancer, other respiratory diseases, and suicide” states National Research Center for Women & Families, even though implanted women are not more likely too smoke.
Women with any kind of breast surgery are at least three times as likely to have an inadequate milk supply for breastfeeding, states the US Institute of Medicine. There have also been concerns of toxicity in breast milk.
Women who have had implants for more than two years have reported problems with memory and concentration however no well-designed published epidemiological research has been done. Nevertheless, a speculated cause is the the potentially toxic levels of platinum in the blood and urine of implanted women. Small amounts of platinum used in making silicone gel breast implants. Breast enhancement is not a one off cost.
On average, implants last 7-12 years. Typically, cosmetic surgery, or problems from cosmetic surgery, are not covered by health insurance. In some states, major health insurance providers do not insure women with breast implants while some other insurers will sell restricted health cover at a higher price, states the NRC.
When the US FDA approved silicone gel implants in 2006, it stated women with these implants should have a breast MRI three years to determine if they are ruptured or leaking. This should be repeated every two years after that. The MRI check for silicone leakage is not covered by insurance for US augmentation patients.
Most women had at least one broken implant within 11 years, according to an FDA study and the likelihood of rupture increases with each year. Silicone migrated outside of the breast capsule for 21% of the women, unaware it had happened and the likelihood of rupture increases every year. Whatever decision a women makes, she should carefully consider the risks with her physician both of side effects and prepare herself physically and emotionally.

If a saline implants leak, the sterile saline solution is absorbed by the body without harm. This is why saline is used in clinical applications such as IV therapy and wound care. Saline implant leakage is also easy to detect as it results in a quick deflation of the implant. Silicone implants leak slowly, because the gel is thicker. This makes leakages much harder to detect, which is particularly harmful because silicone can migrate to other parts of the body if the leakage is not caught in time.
