In Praise of Marriage

The ideal of one true love is the most desired revelation of the soul attained. Founded in integrity and nurtured in loyal love our lives are witnessed in meaningful gaze of a lover.  Our souls immortalized by future generations of children.

The seed of this love cannot be grafted with platitudes. The bond that unifies families, and bonds society requires a willingness to give of oneself.

To seek, and find in another, a meaning that is greater than oneself. To share a home, where sheltered from the storms of life, we can find solace and support, peace and tranquility even meaningful advice.

Not the short term distraction of infidelity can contentment be so beautified. Nor in unbridled, scattered lusts can there be found a deep protective mirroring of the soul. A willingness of both to sacrifice all for the protection of the lover.

In this sacred union of divinity, in this hieros gamos of emotional union, two souls find they are indeed one -one with each other and one with divinity.

Yet for many they are merged one in body but two souls on different paths. Seeking disparate paths, unable to escape the emotional erosion of their foundation.

Each chipping away a separate life from the sculpted unity that could be theirs to hold. Entering a bond with exaggerated illusions they seek release almost unaware that from their differences is the potential for joy greater than their separate lives.

Overwhelmed by the burdens of life, parenthood and employment it is easy to condemn marriage as unworkable, when its strength comes through unitedly fulfilling each other’s divine purpose.

While some reflect the implied commitment, seeking informal disposable love. Like marriage and sex, there are extremes for good or bad in both views.

Like, marriage, the intensity of closeness can magnify qualities good and bad. It is from both good and bad that we can see ourselves in the mirror of experience.

Like floating dust in a door way, the potential light is revealed by the floating of refuse. It is from the pain and challenge that we find where we are needed.

We find our purpose by how we are needed.  .

Certainly romance and lust cannot meet that challenge. While each day should be reborn anew, love kept fresh, and flirtatious teasing delight the heart, the latest sex toy will not fill an empty hear searching for meaning.

Marriage is not a technique devoid of character or substance. It is founded on strength, maturity, discipline and similarity.

A beautiful palace, glistening with gold, celebration and joviality, is only as strong as its foundation.
