Women living in countries with high rates of disease and ill health prefer “masculine”-looking men rather than “feminine”-looking guys, claim scientists from Scotland’s University of Aberdeen.

Psychologists tested the theory that masculine traits in men are a sign of genetic health. The theory holds that women are influenced by choosing a mate who will produce stronger children.

But then this idea is nothing new.  The Adonis Effect recognizes this and markets a golden ratio figure as an easier and biologically better body building system.

Unsurprisingly, FRMI studies prove men respond to a womans hourglass figure like a drug.

More than 4,500 women aged between 16 to 40 were all heterosexual from 30 countries recruited over the Internet and via the Face Research Lab website. They were asked which of two faces of the same man were more attractive.

Twenty photos had been morphed to look either square-jawed and masculine, or slim-jawed and feminine.

They found that this is indeed the case and that the lower level of health in a country the higher the preference among women for masculine facial traits.

Preference for masculine features rose sharply as the country’s “national health index” (NHI) fell, The NHI is a collection of eight World Health Organisation (WHO) indices covering mortality rates, life expectancy and communicable diseases reports the Deccan Times.

These findings are part of ongoing University research into facial attractiveness and how people choose a mate. They were published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

“Our prediction was correct,” said lead researcher Lisa DeBruine. “Women from countries with poorer health did prefer masculine men more.”

“We found that women in countries like Brazil, Argentina and Mexico where the health is poorer were more attracted to masculine looking faces than women in countries like Belgium and Sweden, which have lower mortality rates and higher longevity” she said in a University of Aberdeen press release.

These new findings really do seem to show that preferences for different types of men in different parts of the world are linked to cross-cultural differences in health” said Dr Ben Jones, who was also involved in the research.

“The effect remained even when we controlled for lots of other factors, such as cross-cultural differences in wealth.”

Country and culture also influences mating preferences, but this is only because of variations in the local environment, said DeBruine.

Women share a similar biological drive, she said.

Previously, DeBruine found that women who were detered by cues of pathogens such as open sores and preferred masculine-features in men.

“Sexually dimorphic (distinct) facial cues have greater effects when women judge own-race faces than other-race faces,” according to the study.

However, mate choice includes many complexities.

In an unhealthy, germ-filled environment may prefer a man whose masculinity implies strong genetic health, but simultaneously be unsure if he will be a good parent.

“Indeed, there is compelling evidence that women ascribe antisocial traits and behaviours to masculine men,” says the study, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

“Women perceive masculine men as dishonest, uncooperative, more interested in short-term than long-term relationships, and even as ‘bad parents’.”

This agrees with research used by The Adonis Effect body building program.

Basically a man with more muscle tone is more likely to get a lady to his bedroom and with less required romance according to evolutionary psychology. However you can have too much muscle. Huge body builders are often treated with suspicion as untrustworthy states Brad Howard “The Adonis Effect co-author.

“Both men and women make instant assumptions about you based on the way you look (known as value attribution)…  and It’s almost impossible to change those assumptions once they are ingrained (diagnosis bias) so you might as well intercept these assumptions and control them as weapons of mass influence!” he said.

“Studies have shown that a male body that has this particular shape garners more attraction from women and more admiration and FEAR from other men” he said.

Or is this an over simplification?

During the most fertile, phase of a women’s menstrual cycle, a woman is more likely to prefer masculine men reports the Deccan Times. Social equality and control of resources can also shape perceptions about male attractiveness.

However, the study was from majority Caucasian populations Russia and Romania, to Canada and the United States. but also America, South America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand The majority identified themselves as white.

However, DeBruine hoped to study countries with very poor national health, however, these countries tend to have poor Internet access. This makes it hard to get a representative cross-section of the population.
