For centuries, tansy has been used as a folk remedy, but now scientists from Britain and Spain believe the plant may have medical benefits after all, as a treatment for herpes. The team’s findings, published in Phytotherapy Research, are the result of joint work between two teams to established scientific evidence for traditional medicines.

Tansy, Tanacetum vulgare, is a flowering plant found across mainland Europe and Asia. From the Middle Ages onwards the plant, whose folk names include Golden Buttons and Mugwort, has been used as a remedy for various conditions, from fevers to rheumatism. However, it’s supposed medical benefits have always been questioned.

“Our research focused on the anti-viral properties of tansy, especially the potential treatment it may represent for herpes,” said lead author Professor Francisco Parra from the Universidad de Oviedo. “We currently lack an effective vaccine for either HSV-1 or HSV-2 stands of the disease, which can cause long term infections.”

Professor Parra’s team which specialises in investigating new antiviral compounds, both through design or by screening natural plant extracts, began joint work on the properties of tansy with the research group led by Dr Solomon Habtemariam from the University of Greenwich, which studies European medicinal plants to establish the scientific evidence for traditional medicines.

Through a mechanistic-based antiherpetic activity study, the teams revealed which constituents of the plant are responsible for antiviral activity.

“Our study revealed that parthenolide is not one of the major anti HSV-1 principles of tansy, as has been suggested. However we found that tansy does contains known antiviral agents including 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3,5-DCQA) as well as axillarin, which contributes to its antiherpetic effect,” said Parra. “This shows that multiple properties of the plant are responsible for the supposed antiviral activity of tansy.”

The joint study used an established anti-HSV study model on both crude extracts of the aerial parts and roots of tansy, as well as some purified compounds to analyse the plants anti-viral activity.

“Although the precise molecular targets for tansy extract require further research this study reveals the clear potential of tansy to treat the dermatological lesions caused by HSV, concluded Parra. “This shows that systematic pharmacological and phytochemical studies such as this can play pivotal roles in the modernisation of European traditional herbal medicines.”

Perhaps research of Mormons from 1830 and 1894 mat reveal why Big Love may not mean Big Family.

According to a study published in the the March 2011 issue of Evolution and Human Behavior, polygamy practiced by some 19th century Mormon men had effect of suppressing the overall offspring numbers of Mormon women in plural marriages.

The research was conducted by scientists from Indiana University Bloomington and three other institutions.

The more sister-wives a Mormon woman had, the fewer children she was likely to produce.

“Although it’s great in terms of number of children for successful males to have harems, the data show that for every new woman added to a male’s household, the number each wife produced goes down by one child or so,” said IU Bloomington evolutionary biologist Michael Wade, whose theoretical work guided the study. “This regression is known as a ‘Bateman gradient,’ named after the geneticist who first observed a similar phenomenon in fruit flies.”

The researchers’ survey of birth, marriage and death records from the Utah Population Database covers nearly 186,000 Utah adults and their 630,000 children who lived or died between 1830 and 1894. This period marked an important transition for the nascent Mormon Church, as polygamy began to be phased out in deference to U.S. laws banning the practice but also via internal pressure from the Mormons themselves.

The scientists’ study confirmed their expectation that a moratorium on Mormon polygamy would have the effect of decreasing the intensity of sexual selection among males and ultimately bringing the strength of reproductive selection on men closer to that acting on women. With fewer polygamous marriages, more males had access to wives, which led to a decrease in the variation in Mormon males’ mating and reproductive success. The scientists estimate that ending polygamy reduced the strength of sexual selection on males by 58 percent.

“This study was very exciting for us, in large part because you just don’t get to see the demographic effects of dramatically changing a mating system within a single population — in any organism,” Wade said. “It’s an added bonus that this change from polygamy to monogamy just happened to involve people who kept such thorough records of the marriages, births and deaths at that time.”

Wade, who specializes in the evolutionary biology of mating systems, says much of his work has elucidated and expanded on the ideas of Angus Bateman. Bateman, a prolific theorist, was unable to empirically test all his theories about mating and mating fitness before he died in 1996. Last year Wade and Northern Arizona University biologist Stephen Shuster co-wrote a retrospective on a classic paper Bateman wrote for the journal Heredity in 1948. Wade and Shuster extolled Bateman’s vision, in particular the way in which Bateman thought sexual selection should be quantified. Bateman’s critics thought his reductions of biology were too simplistic, yet Wade says Bateman’s simple formulas are often dead-on.

“Bateman’s ideas still are very much alive, the present study included,” Wade said. “It was also his idea that selection could be stronger on males than on females, that what can be an advantage to males can be a disadvantage to females of the same species. And the advantage isn’t just in having more mates. You may simply produce more offspring, than the average, if you’re a male successful in reproductive competition against other males.”

Which isn’t to say systems of polygamy in humans or elsewhere in nature are necessarily good for all the males involved. Indeed, Wade says, polygamy is a bad thing for most males of a species.

“When the ratio of sexes is about equal, for every male that has three mates, there must be two males that have none,” Wade said. “If a male has even more mates, then the disparity among male ‘reproductive’ haves and have-nots can become quite great.”

So if polygamy (or the female equivalent, polyandry) is disadvantageous to most of the sequestered sex and most of the mate-sequestering sex, why should such systems survive?

“The complete answer is still forthcoming,” Wade said. “One thing we know now, based on rigorous studies in many species, particularly the fruit fly, is that selection can be so strong on males that it can drag the entire species off of a naturally selected viability optimum.”

Wade points to a familiar example.

“Take the peacock,” Wade said. “Its tail is magnificent for attracting females and bad for attracting predators. It is believed that in some situations there is a “predator hard cap” on the fitness of sexual characteristics. But there’s also research suggesting even the predator hard cap can be overpowered if sexual selection on males is strong enough. That is, males trade high risks to their lives in order to gain large numbers of mates and thereby offspring.”

A study, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, provides new insight into the psychological adaptations behind men’s desire for a variety of partners and women’s desire for a committed partner.

These drives have played a key role in the evolution of human mating psychology., claims the research from the University of Texas at Austin.

Women show the opposite pattern. They are more likely to continue dating a man who has had a heterosexual affair than one who has had a homosexual affair.

“A robust jealousy mechanism is activated in men and women by different types of cues — those that threaten paternity in men and those that threaten abandonment in women,” says Confer.

Confer conducted the study with her father, Mark D. Cloud, a psychology professor at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania.

The researchers asked 700 college students to imagine they were in a committed romantic and sexual relationship with someone they’ve been dating for three months. They were then asked how they would respond to infidelity committed by the imagined partner, reports Science Daily.

Some participants were told their partners had been unfaithful with a man, others with a woman. Some were told their partners had an affair with one person, others with multiple partners. Some were told the infidelity happened once, others twice.

Men are more distressed by the type of infidelity that could threaten the paternity of their offspring.

The results are remarkable because surveys show men have more negative attitudes toward homosexuality and to be less supportive of civil rights for same-sex couples than women.

“However, this general trend of men showing lower tolerance for homosexuality than women is reversed in the one fitness-enhancing situation — female homosexuality,” say the authors.

Women objected to continuing a relationship following both types of affairs. However, a homosexual affair may be seen as a sign of dissatisfaction with the current relationship and a prelude to possible abandonment..

Asked the outcomes of real-life infidelity experiences, men were significantly more likely than women to have ended their actual relationships following a partner’s (presumably heterosexual) affair.

Sex in pregnancy, reports a new Canadian Medical Association Journal primer for physicians to counsel patients. on current evidence there are few complications.

Potential Risks?

Uncommon potential risks from sex in pregnancy include

1. premature labour,
2. pelvic inflammatory disease,
3. hemorrhage in placenta previa (when the placenta covers part of the cervix)
4. and blood clots.

Restricting intercourse is recommended for women at risk of premature labour, but the evidence is contradictory and limited.

In low-risk women, frequent intercourse was associated with an increased risk of premature labour only in women with lower genital tract infections. In higher risk women – carrying more than one baby, with cervical incompetence or a history of early labour – there is limited evidence to guide recommendations.

“In populations at increased risk for preterm labour, there is no evidence to suggest a clear benefit from restricted sexual activity”writes Dr. Clair Jones, Department of Obstetrics, Mount Sinai Hospital and University of Toronto.

However, this is a simple intervention that causes no harm and may be a reasonable recommendation until better evidence emerges.”

In rare cases, some types of sexual activity that push air into the vagina may result in a uterine blood clot that is usually fatal.

“Sex in pregnancy is normal. There are very few proven contraindications and risks to intercourse in low-risk pregnancies” write the authors, who recommend these patients should be reassured.

While evidence to support abstinence is lacking in pregnancies complicated by placenta previa or an increased risk of preterm labour, they consider abstiemce a “reasonable benign recommendation given the theoretical catastrophic consequences.”

There is no evidence that sex at term can induce labour but no known negative outcomes exist for women with low-risk pregnancies.

Women should be guided by their comfort level and sexual readiness during pregnancy and postpartum period.

Mothers who drink alcohol while they are pregnant may be damaging the fertility of their future sons, according to research to Danish researchers.
Doctors in Denmark found that if mothers had drunk 4.5 or more drinks a week while pregnant, then the sperm concentration of their sons, measured about 20 years later, was a third lower in comparison to men who were not exposed to alcohol while in the womb.
A drink was measured as 12 grams of alcohol, which is the equivalent to one 330 ml beer, one small (120 ml) glass of wine or one glass of spirits (40 ml).
“Our study shows that there is an association between drinking a moderate amount of alcohol (about four to five drinks a week) during pregnancy and lower sperm concentrations in sons” said Dr Cecilia Ramlau-Hansen, senior researcher at the Department of Occupational Medicine, Aarhus University Hospital.
“Because this is an observational study we cannot say for certain that the alcohol causes the lower sperm concentrations” she said at the 26th annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology held in June at Rome.
“It is possible that drinking alcohol during pregnancy has a harmful effect on the foetal semen-producing tissue in the testes – and thereby on semen quality in later life – but our study is the first of its kind, and more research within this area is needed before any causal link can be established or safe drinking limits proposed.”
Dr Ramlau-Hansen, who is also clinical associate professor at the Department of Epidemiology, Institute of Public Health, University of Aarhus and her colleagues studied 347 sons of 11,980 women with singleton pregnancies.
The women were recruited to the Danish “Healthy habits for two” study between 1984-1987. Around the 36th week of pregnancy the mothers answered a questionnaire on lifestyles and health. The sons were followed up between 2005-2006, when they were aged between 18-21, and semen and blood samples were collected and analysed.
The researchers divided the sons into four groups, ranging from those who were least exposed to alcohol (their mothers had drunk less than one drink a week) – and this was the reference group against which the other groups were measured – to those whose mothers drank 1-1.5 drinks a week, 2-4 drinks a week, or 4.5 or more drinks per week.
Sons of mothers drinking 4.5 or more alcoholic drinks a week had average sperm concentrations of 25 million per millilitre, while the sons who were least exposed to alcohol had sperm concentrations of 40 million/ml.
After adjusting for various confounding factors, they found the sons in the group most exposed to alcohol had an average sperm concentration that was approximately 32% lower than that in the least exposed group.
The World Health Organization defines a “normal” level of sperm concentration as being approximately 20 million/ml or more.
“The reduced sperm concentrations in the most exposed men are rather close to the lower end of the WHO’s normal range for fertility” Dr Ramlau-Hansen said. “The probability of conception increases with increased sperm concentration up to 40 million/ml and so it is possible that the most exposed men could be less fertile than the least exposed.”
She found that semen volume and total sperm count (which also affect a man’s fertility) were associated with prenatal alcohol exposure; these were highest in sons whose mothers drank 1-1.5 drinks a week. The researchers could find no association between alcohol exposure and the movement and shape of the sperm or with any reproductive hormones such as testosterone.
“Our finding that sons prenatally exposed to 1-1.5 drinks per week had higher semen volume and total sperm count compared to the least exposed group is not surprising and is quite a common finding when studying alcohol” said Dr Ramlau-Hansen.
“It could indicate that small amounts of alcohol have a beneficial effect (for example, on the semen-producing tissue in the foetal testes), but, in fact, we believe this result may be biased by the characteristics of the women drinking small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy or by inaccurate reporting of alcohol consumption. Therefore, it is not possible to draw a firm conclusion from this result.”
The researchers also investigated whether fathers’ alcohol consumption had any effect.
“We investigated the association between fathers’ total alcohol intake and semen quality in the sons and found that paternal alcohol was not associated with semen volume or sperm concentration.”
This suggests that the observed associations between maternal alcohol consumption and sons’ semen quality are related to the couples shared lifestyle factors such as smoking, she said.
If a mothers alcohol consumption can be shown to cause reduced semen concentration in male children, then it could be worth researching if alcohol consumption and the decreased fertility in some cultures is found in lands more where pregnant women more commonly drink, she said.

More than half of men and women don’t realize that the brain as an important female sexual organ. Women and men’s feelings about sex and sexual desire are more alike than people may think.

“The root of a woman’s desire is complex, but it is thought to start with her brain” said sex and relationship expert Laura Berman. “The brain is the center for thoughts and emotions, but it is also home to a complex system of nerves, hormones and other chemicals that can affect sexual desire.”

A demographically representative national internet sample of 1,300 women between the ages of 30 and 55 and 1,129 men 30-65 found that both men and women agree that sexual health is important for a woman’s overall health and well being.

They were invited via email to participate in a 10-minute self-administered online survey. Women who  had a full hysterectomy, currently take hormone replacement therapy, are post-menopausal or had already passed menopause were excluded.

Data for these studies are tested for statistical difference at a confidence level of 95 percent. Data are weighted to reflect accurate representation of population.

Yet less than half of both women and men have ever discussed the issue of a decrease in sexual desire with their partner. Even though most of the surveyed woman, and their partners,  said they would be concerned if they experienced it.

Survey Findings
The “Sex Brain Body: Make the Connection” survey was conducted between February 8 and March 18, 2010 was designed to explore the attitudes and behaviors of women regarding their sexual health, as well as men’s perception of a woman’s sexual health.

Highlights of the survey include the following:

• Nearly 75 percent of women report experiencing a lack of sexual desire at least occasionally, with 20 percent reporting a lack of desire frequently

• Both women and men believe a woman’s lack of desire for sex would cause distress in a relationship (78 percent women, 63 percent men); more than half of women and men say that a lack of desire would have a negative impact on their relationship

• Most women (roughly 60 percent) say they would discuss low sexual desire with their health care provider, yet only 14 percent have actually done so

• More women would rather discuss other health topics such as allergies, skin care, hair loss and weight issues with their health care provider than talk about their sexual health

• Women are seven times more familiar with erectile dysfunction (66 percent) than Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) (9 percent)

“As a woman, wife and mother, I know that women’s sexual desire can fluctuate. For some women that’s normal, but for others it may be something more,” said actress and TV personality Lisa Rinna. “Everyone is entitled to a healthy sex life.”

Rinna along with the Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR), had launched “Sex Brain Body: Make the Connection,” in May, as an educational campaign about female sexual health, particularly about the role the brain is thought to play in female sexual desire.

Experts believe that chemicals in the brain may play a role in sexual response, impacting a woman’s sexual desire. Women and men surveyed believe that desire is important for a healthy sex life, and that a decline in a woman’s desire would be distressing to the woman.

Yet, few people realize that a lack of sexual desire accompanied by distress might be something more than stress from a demanding career or family commitments. It may be a medical condition known as Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder, or HSDD.

As more women wait until their 30s and 40s to have children, they are more willing to engage in a variety of sexual activities to capitalize on their remaining childbearing years, according to new research by psychologists at The University of Texas at Austin.

Such “reproduction expediting” includes one-night stands and adventurous bedroom behavior, the research shows.

In a paper published in the July edition of Personality and Individual Differences, psychology graduate students Judith Easton, Jaime Confer and Cari Goetz, and David Buss, professor of psychology, found that women age 27-45 have a heightened sex drive in response to their dwindling fertility.

In the study the researchers split 827 women into three groups: high fertility (ages18-26), low fertility (ages 27-45), and menopausal (ages 46 and up). The respondents answered an online questionnaire about their sexual attitudes and behavior.

Compared with the other groups, women with low fertility were more likely to experience:

• Frequent sexual fantasies
• Thoughts about sexual activities
• More intense sexual fantasies than their younger counterparts
• A more active sex life and willingness to have a one-night stand
• A willingness to have casual sex

Contrary to their predictions, the researchers found that when comparing low and high fertility women who were in relationships, the older, less fertile group did not fantasize more about someone other than their current romantic partners. Instead they fantasized equally about their significant others and other romantic partners.

According to a 2010 report from the Pew Research Center’s Social & Demographic Trends, mothers of newborns in all race and ethnic groups are now older than their counterparts 20 years ago. Fourteen percent of births in 2008 were to women ages 35 and older, and 10 percent were to teens. With more women having children past their peak childbearing years, Easton says she believes the research will have implications on reproductive and sexual health issues, such as fertility, sexual dysfunction and marital development.

“Our findings suggest that women don’t need to necessarily go ‘baby crazy’ in their 30s or go around thinking they’re supposed to be having a ‘sexual peak,’” Easton said. “Our results suggest there is nothing special about the 30s, but that instead these behaviors manifest in all women with declining fertility. It may be more difficult to conceive past the age of 35, but our research suggests women’s psychology will continue to motivate them to try until menopause.”

The study outlines for the first time the changes in women’s reproductive behavior across the life cycle from an evolutionary standpoint. The researchers attribute these differences to ingrained psychological mechanisms rooted in each gender’s adaptive responses over millennia of human evolution.

Hydroxythiohomosildenafil, like sildenafil, may interact with prescription drugs known as nitrates, including nitroglycerin, and cause dangerously low blood pressure.

People with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease are often prescribed drugs containing nitrates, and men with these conditions commonly suffer from erectile dysfunction

While this is considered by doctors in prescribing medications for ED, the failure of claimed natural remedies to reveal the ingredient is a serious risk.

Is Sexting digital adultery?

Recently blogger Rebecca Ammon argued that adultery is as common in modern relationships as breakups.

Sexting enthusiasts often use smart phones to flirt and to line up booty-calls, she writes. “Cybersex was the adultery of the ancients. Now our virtual flirting has become quicker, easier, and illustrated with digital pictures and videos.”

Pointing out she has not run off to copulate with any on her sexting list she asks whats the harm?

That got me thinking. Traditionalists fear that man will go off the rails if not give no controls. In practice, more tolerant people seem to enjoy happier families than the dogmatically religious.

Of course, people can be extremely spiritual and religious while not being dogmatic.

It just seems that sometimes we allow our need to assert our institutions and traditions over those of others.

I think there is great value in the power of religion to encourage people to seek and refine the soul.

Its just that 99% od us sink into a traditional void of self justification and ego driven self service – sometimes in the name of the religion we hold dear.

When any belief structure helps us to assess our priority of values and match them to serve the values of others then it can change the world.

But how can you do it?

When we are chasing as many dates as we can handle, we are hoping to find the one. When we settle with one, our mind easily admires the many.

We at once yearn for a unity of soul and fight disparate yearning.

To familiar we infatuate then, to different and we despise them.

Biology is real and so are the the disowned parts of the soul that comeback to haunt our souls ans our societies.

The balance is found in living by our own hierarchy of values while seeking to honor the values of those we hold dear.

It is madness to expect others to follow our own values if they cannot see how their own values will be met.

The question is how?

We are affected by many influences. We cannot deny the effect of biology on our morality. However, should we seek to go beyond and be even better than what lusts propel us toward?

Is religion a “sort of parasitic meme that exploits the existing architecture of the human mind” to quote Psychology Today or an adaptive strategy “inspiring group cohesiveness or helping us stay in line when we’re not sure whether anyone is watching.”

A recent study of 987 revealed you could predict if a person would have liberal views about drugs by simply asking whether sex without love is OK.

Asked about their personalities, sensitivities, and moral views, their religion, politics, and personality mattered less than what evolutionary psychologists call mating strategy.

Another study  “found the strongest predictors of attending church were those related to sexual and family values (opposition to infidelity, to premarital sex, to abortion, and the like). When we statistically controlled for the sexual and family value items, the links between religious attendance and the other moral values disappeared.”

Perhaps seeing a sexy girl in church might inspire a moment of religious devotion? The hillsong church in Australia has been accused of using lusciously attractive female to help stock its amply attended  Hillsong Church.

I am not a member and think the critics just have sour grapes – they need not worry.

Seeing a lot of highly attractive and available may make you profess more belief in God, states  the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.But not in the way you may have guessed.

According to the study “women professed more religious piety when they saw beautiful women; men were more likely to look to the heavens when they saw a lot of handsome men.”

Researchers Kurzban and DeScioli believe that “moral beliefs are not so much about trying to inspire me to do the right thing myself, as they are about trying to control your behavior in ways that support my reproductive goals.”

This fits research that conservative attitudes about sex and reproduction are at the heart of people’s participation in traditional religious groups.  Attitudes about sex and family are causes of religious attendance, and not just effects of religious training, according to Psychology Today.

Before you send me to hell for suggesting we should throw all religion into the garbage. Let it be clear I am not claiming knowledge for or against the divine.

I don’t need to know about foreknowledge or absolute truth to know that people do experience hunches, intuitions, and moments that are so often right when they look within.

I have simply began to learn to listen. This subconscious realm seems to better be able to computer multiple complex decisions.

We are complex beings, biology does – and must –influence our thinking. So does the human yearning to find a greater meaning.

Whether there is an energy body in the silence, I am sure seeking it can enhance compassion. However, society, including religion, puts detaches us from the inner realm.

History constantly reminds us that we attract people, lovers and children that manifest our soul disowned parts. So do societies.

The more we fight it the worse it gets. Rules may be needed -  it’s just that excessive rules always eventually give way and are followed by moments of excessive demands for freedoms.

On the flip side, unrestrained freedom eventually is found wanting and bankrupt. Like the dissatisfied child who never earned his way, the pleasure becomes meaningless.

This brings me back to Rebecca Ammon’s point about sexting.

Rebecca is right to say that cheating is nothing new. Trying to force my values will not change you – nor would you change me.

However, we are not an island; we all synergistically effect each other.

So I encourage you to consider how we can both meet our own value system in a way that empower s other s to live by theirs.

As history teaches us – the more I understand you, the more you are likely to become the person I admire around me.

Rats may become sexy after a sip of java, but pumping tea may dump your sex drive and worsen your rheumatism.

According to Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome, Italy, women who large amounts of tea increase their risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis which negatively affect their emotional relationships and sex lives.

A French study of 1,271 patients with an average age 64 found a strong correlation between RA disease severity and impact on sex life.

Athough , 98% of this group were receiving treatment, 66% stated their rheumatoid arthritis harmed their sexual relationships. It was the sole reason why 40% said they were not sexually active.

A decrease or lost libido effected 47%, and joint pain or stiffness in 24% with a moderate to severe level of impact on their physical functioning.

Significant emotional consequences effected 39% who felt guilt and frustration.

Despite the high physical and emotional impact of the arthritis , 72% admitted they had never talked about how their sexuality was effected with their doctor – 66% were unwilling and 62% said did not need help.

How will java effect my sex life and joints?

Drinking any amount of tea carried a significant risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis according to a US longitudinal study of 76,643 women. Especially those who drank and women who drank 24 cups of tea a day.

Their was no increased risk for coffee drinkers, regardless of whether the coffee as filtered, unfiltered, caffeinated or not.

The study used age-adjusted models and in multivariate Cox proportional hazard models and included a three year follow up.

It’s frightening to think that more than 90% of the 430,000 human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infections in children each year occur in sub-Saharan Africa.

The rates of infection with HIV in southern Africa are 3 to 5 times higher than in the rest of sub-Saharan Africa and more than 100 times higher than in the rest of the world.

There over 40% of infections occur from breast milk yet breast-feeding is a cornerstone of an African child survival. In most of sub-Saharan Africa formula feeding is neither safe nor feasible.

Besides during breastfeeding , a woman infected with HIV can transmit the virus to her child during pregnancy, labor and delivery.

The good news is that two randomized trials reported in this issue of the New England Journal of medicine show that antiretroviral regimens in breast-feeding infants or lactating mothers may block 99% of HIV transmission.

“This is the lowest rate of mother-to-child transmission recorded in a study from Africa, or among breastfeeding infants,” said lead author Roger Shapiro, in a Medical News Today report. When breastfeeding to 6 months, the  mother-to-child transmission rate was 1.1%.

“Previous interventions using shorter or less comprehensive drug treatment regimens have been unable to get rates below 5%” said Shaphiro, who is Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, “and without any intervention, the infection rate would be at least 25% by 6 months.”

The studies Antiretroviral Regimens in Pregnancy and Breast-Feeding in Botswana and Maternal or Infant Antiretroviral Drugs to Reduce HIV-1 Transmission were both published in the June 17 edition of The New England Journal of Medicine.

The study was the first randomized clinical trial to compare highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimens used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
“The intervention that would have the most substantial impact on HIV-1-related maternal deaths and perinatal infections throughout the world” said Dr. Lynne Mofenson of the National Institutes of Heath in the Journal editorial “is the initiation of lifelong antiretroviral therapy in pregnant and lactating women infected with HIV-1 who meet the treatment criteria.”

“Although the trials cannot be directly compared, some important lessons can be gleaned. To maximally reduce transmission, antiretroviral regimens must start during pregnancy” Mofenson said.

With two similarly effective interventions, the choice of prophylaxis involves several considerations, including relative costs, feasibility, and risks and benefits.

“The cost-effectiveness of the two interventions has not been determined” said Mofenson.

For example, “infant prophylaxis combined with antepartum zidovudine plus single-dose nevirapine plus 1 week of zidovudine–lamivudine is less expensive than a maternal triple-drug regimen, but it may be more difficult to implement. “

With maternal triple-drug prophylaxis, the risks of drug toxicity in women, possible adverse pregnancy outcomes, treatment interruption after prolonged exposure during pregnancy and breast-feeding, and fetal exposure to multiple drugs must be weighed against the benefit of preventing transmission.

Professor Max Essex  pointed out that “until now, HIV-infected mothers in Africa were faced with a choice between breastfeeding and a high risk of infecting their children with HIV, or using formula and risking high infant morbidity and mortality from other diseases associated with not breastfeeding” said,

”This study provides a more satisfactory solution,” Dr Essex said who is Mary Woodard Lasker Professor of Health Sciences and chair of the Harvard School of Public Health AIDS Initiative.

An FDA background document has found that Flibanserin, a drug aimed at treating female sexual dysfunction failed to make a significant difference in two studies.

Although some women reported slightly more sexually satisfying experiences, the studies conducted by the drug’s maker, Boehringer Ingelheim, failed to show a significant increase in female participants’ libido, as recorded by the women in a daily journal.

This follows a  marketing campaign by the company. For example, in November 2009, one study claimed that compared to a placebo, 100 milligrams of flibanserin once a day improved  the number of satisfying sexual events reported, sexual desire, reduced sex from sexual dysfunction and improved sexual functioning.

The FDA claimed only a 3 to 15% greater than those in the placebo.

Flibanserin is a post-synaptic 5-HT1A agonist and 5-HT2A antagonists have been evaluated for major depressive disorder (MDD) and for the treatment of HSDD in premenopausal women.

The neurotransmitter serotonin may have a role in HSDD by acting excessively as a sexual satiety signal. Besides acting at the serotinin receptors flibanserin binds to 5-HT2B, 5-HT 2C and dopamine D4 receptors.

There are no currently marketed products with the same neurotransmitter activity as flibanserin.

Stimulation of the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor in male rodents has been associated with decreased sexual behavior. So it was theorized that  5-HT2A antagonism would have pro-sexual effects.

The FDA concluded that the trials did not show a statistically significant difference for the co-primary endpoint, the eDiary sexual desire score.

These end points were measured by the number of successful and satisfactory genital, oral or masturbatory sexual encounters over time as made by the woman and not her partner.

Any measured physical changes such as increased vagina or clitoral blood flow, clitoral engorgement or vaginal lubrication was expected to be significantly and clinically linked to these increased satisfying encounters.

The results were required to be demonstrated overtime compared to a placebo and an overall increase in sexual desire expected regardless of whether or not a sexual event occurred.

The FDA also observed fatigue, sedation and drowsiness were commonly reported. Possible side effects caused nearly 15% of the participating women to stop taking the drug before the study ended.

Whether the safety and efficacy data could be generalized to the drugs target population is unclear because there were many significant medical and medication exclusion criteria for the efficacy trials.

Boehringer has been accused of trying to make low libido into a disease, and overstating the prevalence of female sexual dysfunction at a rate of 43% of women.

Australian researcher Ray Moyniham  claimed “the corporate sponsored creation of a disease is not a new phenomenon,¹ but the making of female sexual dysfunction is the freshest, clearest example we have” in the British Medical Journal.
