A new anesthetic aerosol spray, that contains lidocaine and prilocaine, may be a solution to medically diagnosed premature ejaculation. Called PSD502, or Tempe, it is sprayed directly on the penis. It selectively desensitizes only the non-keratinized skin (the inner lining of the foreskin and the surface of the glans), without adversely affecting the sensation of ejaculation.
Researchers presented results of their randomized, Phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled study at the 104th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA).
“Premature ejaculation is one of the most common sexual dysfunctions in men” said AUA spokesperson Ira D. Sharlip. “It occurs in 20-30% of men of all ages.”
Previously, topical creams were applied to desensitize the penile skin and delay ejaculation. These creams can take 45 to sixty minutes to work and the creams have to be washed off before intercourse. Sound pretty passion dissolving to me!
Hence the need for an effective, patient-friendly treatment for this distressing problem.
However, the new treatment can be applied five minutes prior to intercourse.
A total of 300 men diagnosed with premature ejaculation, (intravaginal ejaculatory latency time of a minute or less), were studied.
The men were broken into groups that received PSD502 or a placebo.
Both groups had an average baseline of 0.6 minutes latency time before ejaculation.
After treatment, the PSD502 group improved to a four minutes, a 500% increase, and the placebo to a minute.
Over the several months of the study both men and women reported improved sexual fulfillment. Other than an occasional numbing sensation felt by the female, no other adverse effects were observed.
While 2.6 percent of the PSD502 group reported side events, there were no systemic or serious adverse events. 1 percent of the placebo group reported side effects.
A Los Angeles Public relations release claimed the only issue was “an occasional numbing sensation felt by the female.”
European studies have been promising and now US studies will make FDA approval more likely.
“This new topical spray has promise to become one of the most effective treatments for premature ejaculation” said Dr Sharlip.
“It has a number of characteristics which will be attractive to patients with premature ejaculation.”
